The Greater Sacramento Area consists of a four-county metropolitan area ((El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties) and is the fourth-largest in California, behind the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the San Diego area. Unlike most major metropolitan areas that grew from a civic center, Sacramento started from several small communities that grew together.
